HomeSchool and Parent Conference

I am disappointed that I was unable to attend the Catholic Home School Curriculum Fair this weekend as I had intended. This Fair is the work of Immaculate Heart of Mary Homeschool and Parent Conferences, and co-hosted by ARCH, and University of St. Thomas. (ARCH=Apostolate of Roman Catholic Homeschoolers which serves the diocese of Houston-Galveston) I am doubly unhappy about having missed two talks by Joseph Pearce whose books grace my shelves and whose work I find edifying. Oh well, one doesn’t get to choose when a stomach bug will come along to mess with one’s plans and I am … Continue reading

Home School Conference

Catholic Home School Conference this Friday and Saturday in Houston TX. There are not a lot of home school conferences that serve Catholics. Few Catholic curriculum providers are invited to have booths at the other home school conferences. Few Catholic speakers are invited to give talks at other home school conferences and certainly none that are boldly Catholic in their choice of topics. We ignore this prejudice because we recognize that for most non-Catholics it doesn’t even occur to them that the prejudice might be offensive. We accept that none of our good Catholic Curriculum providers will be advertising in … Continue reading

History Texts and Learning Resources Recommendations

I used to hate history. It was a boring jumble of unrelated dates and isolated incidents completely focused on politics and economics that had no power to capture my imagination and thus could not be remembered.  BORING! Not anymore!  Several things came along to wake up my brain and make history something that I not only no longer dislike but I happily spend hours studying it! Dr. Warren H. Carroll wrote a series of World History texts titled his Christendom Series.  His writing turned me from a non-history learner to a person who enjoys the study of history. He made … Continue reading

Lunchroom Related Reason to Home School

Some school tells a mom who packed a really healthy lunch that it failed inspection and bills her for the crappy school lunch!!!  HERE.   Top it off, the lunch police were WRONG about the lunch not filling the requirements for a healthy lunch. It is just another good reason to bypass the insanity and home school. Here is another write up of the same incident with a good bit of commentary on the topic: HERE.  It seems obvious that this sort of activity should make parents recall the methods of Nazi Germany to take over the children of that … Continue reading

Fr. Z: Remember How We Got Here How the Bishops liked the idea of top down health care but failed to consider that once the government gets into deciding what care is a right and what sort of care is best we are then stuck with many many First Amendment violations and violations of the right to life. An Interview with Alice von Hildebrand on the Latin Mass. Greta Rest In Peace On the culture of death in the USA today and its similarities to the Nazi’s and their evil work murdering Jews and how they made everything they did … Continue reading

Trust and the Bishops

The following video hit home with me.  The American Bishops have  been defining “social justice” not according to the documents of the Church but instead according to the Democratic party for many years now.  Because of this error, the care of the poor has been shifted from the Church to the government. True charity given freely has been replaced by forced taxation. Subsidiarity has been replaced with big government. The Christian serving Christ in the poor has been replaced by a hireling who follows rules and has little time or incentive to care about the individual.  Human dignity suffers, opportunity … Continue reading

Home School History

Home School is a wonderful addition to my vocation. I have never regretted the work I have put into my children’s learning.  The pioneers of the revival of home education that began not that many years ago.  The above video talks about a beginning of one group that started in the early 1980’s but the movement to home educate began to grow in the 1970’s.  It was a long road to prove to the world that home education was worthy of revival! Basic education in this country in the early years was ALL done at home.  The Founding Fathers were … Continue reading

Book Review: Praying with the Orthodox Tradition

Book Review:  Praying With the Orthodox Tradition Introduction by Callistos Ware, Editor Stefano Parenti, translateor and editor Paula Clifford; St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press, 2002. I have purchased this from Amazon.com at the suggestion of an Orthodox friend who knows that I play a persona from 1000AD Byzantium in my Society for Creative Anachronisms (SCA) fun time. The cost of the book was only $10.00 and it was just what I needed! These prayers date from 800AD.  These prayers were in use by Christians from that time and by Orthodox to the present.  PERIOD CORRECT prayers!!  This book includes a good … Continue reading

6th Day of Christmas: Feast of the Holy Family

6th Day of Christmas: Feast of the Holy Family Today we celebrate the Holy Family: Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus.  The Church holds them up as the ideal for the family life of all people. This is a feast day that moves depending on which day Christmas falls on in the year and there is a nice explanation at the link in this sentence. Joseph, sensitive to the spirit of God, was guided by angels in his care and protection of the Christ Child and the Holy Virgin Mary.  His role as protector included teaching a craft to Jesus so … Continue reading

Advice for the beginning home schooler: another blog

Here is a really useful web page of advice for the beginning home school person: At home with the Gabois Family. I dislike music on a blog page because it slows down the loading speed and clashes with the music so often on in our home.  Turning off the speakers on the computer solved that problem. She uses the same sort of mix of educational materials I use and a few that I plan to go look up since I suspect I will love those too. The great books approach is always sound, solid and worthy.  There are books missing … Continue reading
