I am on the side of our Holy Father even if his imprecision of speech makes me uncomfortable. He is the Pope, and on faith and morals cannot err. Himself has said that he holds to all of Church teaching– so every word he says must be understood against the backdrop of total orthodoxy– even if the press and the enemies of the Church (inside and out) refuse to see it that way. Our new Pope is from Argentina, of both Italian and Argentine heritage, a scientist/Chemist, highly orthodox, Jesuit, used public transportation even as Cardinal, disciple of Bl. John Paul II, former Ordinary for Eastern Catholics in Argentina, and began his pontificate with the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory Be, requesting prayer for Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, then asking a blessing and prayers from the people for himself, and then prayer for all the people! I experienced a marvelously refreshing silent spiritual retreat last week. This quiet time to be focused on God and not on the everyday stuff came just in time to help me find my center for Advent. Besides giving us deep messages from Scripture and Church teaching to ponder, daily Mass served faithfully and reverently, this priest spent several hours in the confessional so that if in our examinations of conscience we found anything requiring confession, that was available to us.
