Home School Conference

Catholic Home School Conference this Friday and Saturday in Houston TX. There are not a lot of home school conferences that serve Catholics. Few Catholic curriculum providers are invited to have booths at the other home school conferences. Few Catholic speakers are invited to give talks at other home school conferences and certainly none that are boldly Catholic in their choice of topics. We ignore this prejudice because we recognize that for most non-Catholics it doesn’t even occur to them that the prejudice might be offensive. We accept that none of our good Catholic Curriculum providers will be advertising in … Continue reading

Every Practicing Catholic Must Vote

This fall, every practicing Catholic must vote, and must vote their Catholic consciences, or by the following fall our Catholic schools, our Catholic hospitals, our Catholic Newman Centers, all our public ministries — only excepting our church buildings – could easily be shut down. Because no Catholic institution, under any circumstance, can ever cooperate with the intrinsic evil of killing innocent human life in the womb. No Catholic ministry – and yes, Mr. President, for Catholics our schools and hospitals are ministries – can remain faithful to the Lordship of the Risen Christ and to his glorious Gospel of Life … Continue reading

Playing

At an SCA event we are recreating the age of chivalry “as it ought to have been”.  So the clothing we all wear is an attempt at period garb but while in history many people wore hardly more than rags, when we play anyone can wear anything that is at least an attempt at period.  When we play, the culture mix freely, as do the time periods.  So while I am fascinated with Byzantium around 1000AD, my persona can be sitting next to an Anglo Saxon from 1200, and a Viking from 800. History is our inspiration but this is … Continue reading

Gear and Garb

Tourney of Squires, Cadets and Aracarius was full of fun. It takes a certain amount of effort on the part of each person attending to keep the atmosphere.  It also takes a lot of preparation by those setting up the event! Everyone did a really good job! The autocrats for this event did a fine job with the location. The fields were mowed very short and they had sprayed for insects so nobody was bitten by fire ants.  It was what they call a primitive site, so it was still possible to get bitten, stung or pick up a tick … Continue reading

A Fun Event: Tourney of Squires, Cadets and Aracarius

I had so much fun this Saturday! Baby in tow, outdoors, social FUN! The fun of an organization like the Society for Creative Anachronism is that it encourages a study of history that is oriented to the people and how they actually lived, then creating aspects of that way of life without the elements that were, well, not so fun. This weekend’s event, only an hour from where I live so I could easily drive there, enjoy the day and drive home, was an outdoor event. Here is the top of the blurb from their facebook event page: Tourney of … Continue reading

Outings with Small Children

Running errands with infants and toddlers is not for the faint of heart and yet many parents do it on a regular basis with more children than I have. I took my toddler and infant with me yesterday to run errands.  Usually my darling husband keeps one or both children when I go out but yesterday he was at the dentist having an emergency root canal and not available so off I went in a flurry of over-confidence. First, I didn’t double check the diaper bag. There were lots of diapers and plenty of wipes but, and this is a … Continue reading

Friendship

I’ve been reading a really good book titled, Style, Sex and Substance, 10 Catholic Women Consider the Things that Really Matter, edited by Hallie Lord.  Each chapter has spoken to me about where I am in my life, my faith, my relationships, and my work.  I didn’t expect to get so much out of this book, with its odd title and pink cover, but I have. Just the other day I was bemoaning the fact that my friends are spread out all over the country and their lives are as busy as mine and sometimes I feel a bit lonely.  … Continue reading

Vocation: Sometimes Its Hugs

I get so wrapped up in my vocation and all it entails that I occasionally discover I am missing one of the foundational requirements! Oh, it catches me by surprise.  I will be going along, struggling to juggle the various aspects of my vocation only to have someone say, with a sad expression and a forlorn tone of voice, something like, “you used to hug me more often.” I stop.  THIS is a big marker from the hand of God that I am erring in a huge way and need to change RIGHT NOW. Hugging family members is one of … Continue reading

CHRIST IS RISEN, GLORIFY HIM!

CHRIST IS RISEN, GLORIFY HIM!  HE IS RISEN INDEED, ALLELUIA! Easter is the feast of the new creation. Jesus is risen and dies no more. He has opened the door to a new life, one that no longer knows illness and death. He has taken mankind up into God himself.                         –POPE BENEDICT XVI (from Fr. Z’s blog– go to WDTPRS for the rest) Easter is the apex of the feasts and celebrations of the Catholic Church.  It is the highest of all our high Holy Days.  THIS day we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus.  We celebrate the empty tomb. We … Continue reading

Ordinary Goodness: Baby Smell

Recently not much is getting done around here in the housework or writing realm.  The reason is that I am in love! Ah, yes, the joys of a new baby in the family.  Snuggle time for now, the house can wait, the writing can wait, the baby will not wait. I love the smell of the top of a baby’s head.  That warm soft fuzz accompanied by a soft odor that is unique to babies.  You can keep your “new car smell” because there is no smell better than that of one of my babies.  I could sit and snuggle … Continue reading
