Ordinary Goodness: Baby Smell

Recently not much is getting done around here in the housework or writing realm.  The reason is that I am in love! Ah, yes, the joys of a new baby in the family.  Snuggle time for now, the house can wait, the writing can wait, the baby will not wait.

I love the smell of the top of a baby’s head.  That warm soft fuzz accompanied by a soft odor that is unique to babies.  You can keep your “new car smell” because there is no smell better than that of one of my babies.  I could sit and snuggle and breath in that baby smell all day. Perhaps it is addictive?  It certainly is a blessing.

My vocation includes wife and mother.  The rewards of living my vocation include this pleasure of sitting, cuddling a freshly diapered, freshly fed, happy contented snuggling baby and breathing the smell of that child as I pray for this and my other children and thank God for being so good to me.

What treasure in this life could be anything as priceless as my children?  They are my joy, my vocation, my future, and they are my gift to our culture.  I pray for them and teach them so that when they go out into the world they will carry the light of Christ with them and be leaven in the bread of society.  Even as I sit and breath in the sweet wonderful smell of baby I think about his future and how my efforts here at home, hidden and unappreciated by our society, still benefits that society.

The domestic Church is a channel of grace to the world.  The world needs families who understand their vocations and work hard to raise their children according to the ways of God. We love the world and so we raise our children as Catholics and try hard to teach them to live their Catholicism well for the good of their souls and for the good of all the world.

Are you interested in Social Justice?  Raise children who know and love the Lord and who see their careers as their means of being salt and light in the world, carrying the graces God has given them in the Sacraments out into the world for the good of that world.

Do you love Liberty? Raise children diligently to know Catholic teaching so that they recognize the inherent God given rights of all human beings created in the image and likeness of God and with free will.  Properly recognizing the source of Freedoms requires an understanding of God that the world generally lacks.

Dear God, please help me to raise my children to know, love and serve you in this life and come to be blessed to spend eternity with You. Thank you for the blessing of snuggled babies and warm baby smells. Amen.
