Old Catholic Music: Dies Irae, dies illa

I love old hymns.  Especially ones that were meant to be sung during worship of God in the holy Mass.  Hymns of the Breviary and Missal is a marvelous site. The web site has tons of historical notes which are just an incredible resource about the music.  It explains concepts that, due to the age of the music, might not be so easily understood. If you love Hymnology I recommend that you go enjoy this web site and explore the depths of the entire project. I enjoy all the music of the Church.  Even hymns which seem dark on the … Continue reading

Issues of Faith: Decrees of Nullity

Civil Marriage is what the government does, Sacramental Marriage may occur at the same time as a civil marriage but they are not the same thing.  A civil marriage can end in divorce, a Sacramental Marriage cannot. SACRAMENTAL MARRIAGE is a permanent bond.  Death is the only parting of two souls bound in a Sacramental Marriage.  This bond is so important that EVERYTHING depends on the answer to the question, “Was this marriage that ended in divorce merely a civil marriage or DID A SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE EXIST?” The authority in the Church with the responsibility for discerning through careful … Continue reading

Issues of Faith: Sacramental Marriage

On my favorite forum we had a discussion about divorce.  Agreed upon was that divorce is too common among Catholics.  I believe it is also too common among other Christians as well, but here I deal from the Catholic perspective and allow other Christians to apply the ideas to their own situations. I argued that the problem is not divorce but that Catholics enter into civil marriages without entering into Sacramental Marriages.  Furthermore, the problem of lack of sacramental marriage is due to poor Catechesis (knowledge of what the Church teaches) and lack of discipleship (application of Church teaching to … Continue reading

Sewing Skirts: Preparation

Sewing my own clothing is a goal of mine. I feel that it is part of my personal vocation and thus essential as an aspect of seeking God and seeking sanctity in this life.  Quicksilver to Gold is about this journey, this path of discovery in which I figure out what activities are meant to be included in my plan of life.  Sewing is one of those activities I feel strongly is important for ME.  It may not be something that belongs in your plan of life, but it does belong in mine. Skirts are an easy sewing project.  Some … Continue reading

Creating a Routine

MAKING A ROUTINE If you want to create a routine that can move quickly and get a lot done in an hour or so, you could make a list of those actions you want finished in the period of time for which you are creating a routine. In my case my first routine is: Coffee, bottle, pets… Take your list and break each into steps: “water into microwave”– “bottle into water”– “feed bottle”;  “Start Coffee Pot”– “Put Cup back through grounds”– “drink cup of coffee”; let dogs out–check water–fill water–rinse dish….  Each tiny thing.  Be sure to include things you … Continue reading

Wanted: Partner for Marriage

I’ve been thinking about marriage since I responded to a post on Catholic Online Forum.  A young man was asking about what we thought important to finding the right spouse.  I’ve some things I think worth saying on this topic. I think shared values and faith are pretty well understood to be important in seeking a partner. The following are rarely discussed to any extent and so here is what I have found to be important: Know yourself.  This is an important key.  There are things about each of us that when we are honest about ourselves are traits which … Continue reading

Mystic Monk Coffee–recommendation/unabashed plug

Imagine a group of men dedicated to praying every day without exception.  For what do they pray? For this country, for our leaders, for anyone who might need to be prayed for, and they do it because they feel the call of God on their lives. Some people are called to marriage and children, some to the priesthood, some to teach, and some to prayer to the exclusion of everything else.  That is what this monastery of Carmelites DO, they pray.  They pray every day for hours, they also worship daily at Mass.  It is their main job, but on … Continue reading

Fabric for Sewing: Fibers

I am no expert in fabric.  There are fabulously heavy and huge books on the subject.  For definitions, try this link.  Today, I’m just going to write about the fibers I like and the little bit I know.  Nothing deep or profound. 🙂 Lots of links though to places where I go to read about my favorite fabric fibers. I love natural fibers. I like the way they breath and that they are renewable in their source. Wool is one of my favorites.  In a colder climate, especially a dry cold climate, wool is my hands down favorite of all … Continue reading

Modesty Can Be Fun

I was enjoying some blogs found here, and from there here and here.  One of those blogs posted this question “Could Modesty Just Be More Fun?” My instant response was YES! Absolutely yes.  In a world where modesty is not found all that often, being different from the mob can be absolutely the most fun imaginable.  It is easy to discuss modesty based on the most obvious element, clothing, but it is not the only aspect of modesty; that said, I’m going to talk clothing first. There is the wide variety of clothing styles NOT being worn much these days, … Continue reading
